Juxtapositions

So I'm sure by now everyone has received the email from René Treviño regarding the upcoming Juxtapositions issue. For those who haven't had a chance to read it, there are a couple of lines that have raised some red flags, most notably:

Some students have
expressed concern that the issue is not as inclusive as it has been in years
past.

made the decision to streamline the content included within the
issue.

and perhaps most disturbingly of all:

Everyone benefits from
these changes.

While he also mentions that each show this year will have an accompanying gallery guilde...and that this guide will feature images and bios for all the artists in the show...he never states that the all the artists will appear in Juxtapositions or that the gallery guides will be included with the publication. Also, what control will we have, if any, over the gallery guides? I know we have talked about designing our own, is there any chance we could design our own gallery guide, or is this one of those one size fits all "you take what we give you" kind of thing?

Does anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that MADA may be getting the shaft...yet again?

I'm going to try and get ahold of a copy of Juxtapositions today and find out.

PS - I know there's an upcoming Grad Student Union meeting this at noon (which I can't attend due to class), and from the sounds of it the Juxtapositions magazine may be a topic of discussion (as there are apparently some people out there already unhappy with the publication). If anyone plans to attend it will be held at 4th Bank (in the space between Photo and Hoffberger).

Postcards

I agree about discussing a postcard design for the show. Andrew and I had discussed proposing a little bit of a contest. Everyone would submit something and we would work from there...we also thought it would be funny to try and do some guerrilla style marketing utilizing a billboard on Falls Road. Just a thought. Should we just set up a meeting time and share some ideas?

Live from New York...

OK...more like just back from New York.

For those who haven't been yet, I can't recommend P.S.1 enough. Not only will you find some amazing work and great exhibitions, the museum itself has a great "punk rock" vibe and at two dollars for students its an amazing deal (especially when you consider that going to P.S.1's parent museum, MoMA, will set you back tweleve dollars).

I also had a chance to check out the Regional MFA Exhibition which is being hosted by Hunter College. This was a great opportunity to check out the work being produced by other schools in the Northeast, most notably Tyler, SVA, Hunter, Yale, Rutgers, and a host of others. Since there were so many artists in the show (about five per school) I found my reactions to be pretty mixed...while there were some great pieces there were just as many that left me ambivilent (or worse). Overall this is a great opportunity to see what the "competition" is up to. While there wasn't much in the way of digital work to speak of (although there was at least one digital print that I found to be quite impressive), there was a solid representation of video pieces and enough innovative work to get the creative juices flowing.

Korean Dinner @ Tue. 7:30pm

Hi guys,
As I spead out the rumor about having a Korean dinner together on Tue. (20), it is going to happen at Joung Gak (on 20th Ave., b/w Charlies St. and Maryland Ave.)
(Sorry for the late notice. I've just got back from NY.)

For those who are taking Crisis Centry, I will meet you at Cafe Doris after the class so that we can all go together.

just a thought...

As we begin to work through exhibition design for our thesis show, I would also suggest that we give some thought to designing a postcard (to promote our show/opening). We could work with a place like overnightprints.com and have 250 cards printed for under $90. Just a thought.

Yay for BLOG and YAY for SNOW

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Hello friends :) Thanks Megan for getting us started with the blog! I just uploaded some photos from last weekend...you can see my beautiful new snowboard and my leg as we rode up the lift at SkiLiberty last Sunday. This weekend was not as eventful, especially this afternoon....I took an idea courtesy of Penny and wrote a letter to my neighbors explaining the mailbox scheme (which you guys already know, so I won't repeat) and invited them to meet me at the mailbox today (Sunday) for coffee and to discuss Columbia. I gave the letters to the postal carrier and he put one in each box in the koisk (11 family's boxes). Out of those families, I think I personally know 3... I thought I would have some kind of turn out. Unfortunately, between the hours of noon and 2pm (the hours I told them that I would be at the mailbox waiting to chat), no one from my street showed up. I had 2 friends there as my "film crew", but other than that no one stopped by. A few people drove by very slowly and gave weird looks. Some of my neighbors even came out of their houses and were doing things in the yard or to their cars in the driveway, clearly saw me standing there and didn't approach me. This makes for an interesting story. Anyways, I'll have more on that for the next crit. Just wanted to share that with you guys. Hope everyone had a fun, productive weekend. Until Tuesday, unless we get snowed in!! ....

...why can't we be doing THIS for sound

project website

Its really amazing what can be done with the technology that currently exists. Is anyone else frustrated that despite what can be done (as this video so beautifully demonstrates), we are still using interfaces derived from antiquated technology? Obviously the use of GUI that resembled mixing boards and other analogue audio equipment was useful in helping sound engineers (and other audio professionals) make the jump to working digitally...but now that the digital format has become ubiquitous, why isn't there a wider variety of GUIs?

A little something to get us started...

I had originally planned on emailing this to everyone a la Maria, but I can't resist an opportunity to experiment with embedding video.

Just a tasty blend of politics, humor and editing goodness.

Enjoy!

¡Bienvenido!

Hey all! I hope that you are able to read this and contribute! I thought this would be a great venue for us to share ideas and events that we think are interesting. I was hoping to get space through the school, but alas, I was denied. Hopefully this will work and we can stay in touch after this year is over.

And so it begins...

Way to go Megan!

Thanks for getting everything up and running.

Let the blogging begin!
